“Democracy and Media in Europe: A Discursive-Material Approach” by Nico Carpentier and Jeffrey Wimmer, the first book publication to result from the MeDeMAP project, will be published by Routledge on December 6, 2024.
The book delves into critical issues such as the democratic roles of media, the struggles surrounding democracy, and the conditions and threats to both institutions. It offers a unique discursive-materialist perspective, bridging theories of communication, politics, and materialism to explore the media’s evolving role in fostering informed citizenry, agonistic debates, and fair representations.
Accompanying its theoretical richness, the book provides practical tools for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to understand and address challenges in democratic governance and media landscapes. The book will be available in an Open Access version under a Creative Commons license via Taylor & Francis.
